Maratha Sword of Raghuji Bhonsle Returns to India After 200 Years

Maratha Heritage Returns Home: 18th-Century Sword Comes Back After Two Centuries

Mumbai, August 12, 2025 — After more than 200 years abroad, a priceless piece of Maratha history is finally returning to Indian soil. The sword of Raghuji Bhonsle I, an influential Maratha leader and founder of the Bhonsle dynasty in Nagpur, will arrive in Mumbai on August 18, marking a major moment in cultural heritage restoration.

From Auction House to Ancestral Land

This historical sword, dating back to the 18th century, was recently purchased at a London auction by the Maharashtra state government for ₹47.15 lakh. The acquisition was made possible under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar, who personally oversaw the process.

The weapon, known for its firangi style (a combination of a European blade with Indian design), features a Mulheri-style hilt plated with gold. An inscription in Devanagari script reads: “Shrimant Raghoji Bhonsle Senasahib Subha Firang” — a rare hallmark of Maratha craftsmanship.

A Symbol of Pride and Legacy

Historians believe the sword was taken from India during the Battle of Sitabuldi in 1817, when the East India Company captured the Bhonsle treasury. For over two centuries, it remained in foreign possession, passing through private collections before landing at the auction where India reclaimed it.

Its homecoming is being celebrated as a symbolic act of restoring dignity and pride to the Maratha community and the nation at large.

Grand Welcome Planned in Mumbai

The sword will be ceremonially received at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and escorted in a traditional procession to P. L. Deshpande Kala Academy in Dadar. The celebrations will culminate in “Gad Garjana” (Roar of the Fort) — an event showcasing Maratha history, music, and cultural performances.

Why This Matters

  • Cultural Repatriation: Bringing back artifacts strengthens historical identity.
  • Heritage Awareness: Events like this inspire younger generations to learn about their roots.
  • Government Initiative: Shows commitment to preserving cultural treasures.

Final Word

The return of Raghuji Bhonsle’s sword is more than a historical retrieval — it is the revival of a proud legacy. As it comes home on August 18, it carries with it not just the weight of steel, but the weight of history, valor, and identity.
