Nagaland Declares 7-Day State Mourning After Governor La. Ganesan’s Demise
Nagaland has declared a seven-day state mourning from August 16 to August 22, 2025, following the demise of Governor La. Ganesan. The decision was taken by the state government to pay tribute to the leader, who passed away at the age of 80 in a Chennai hospital on August 15.
During the mourning period, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast on all official buildings where it is regularly hoisted. The government has also directed that no official entertainment or celebratory events will be held across the state.
Governor La. Ganesan had been undergoing treatment after a serious head injury sustained on August 8. His passing has left a deep void in Nagaland’s political and social circles.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed grief, describing Ganesan as a “humble and wise leader, deeply rooted in values, and a unifier who inspired generations.” A memorial service was held at Raj Bhavan, Kohima, where dignitaries, lawmakers, and citizens gathered to honor his legacy.
The late Governor was known for his dedication, simple lifestyle, and efforts to strengthen ties between the people and the government. His demise has not only saddened Nagaland but also leaders across India who recognized his contribution to public life.
As a mark of respect, Nagaland will remain in solemn observance for the next week. Citizens are joining in prayers and tributes for the departed soul.
