Heavy Rains Cause Flooding in Jammu Region

The Jammu region has been hit hard by torrential monsoon rains, triggering floods, landslides, and severe disruption of normal life.

Record-Breaking Rainfall

Within just 24 hours, Jammu city recorded 190.4 mm of rainfall, making it the second-highest August rainfall in nearly 100 years, after the 1926 record. The downpour has caused rivers and streams to swell dangerously, flooding low-lying areas.

Damage to Infrastructure

The rains have damaged roads, boundary walls, and parts of bridges—especially the Jammu–Pathankot highway, a crucial lifeline for the region. Residential colonies reported inundation, and dozens of vehicles were swept away by strong currents. Several homes suffered wall collapses, leaving families displaced.

Schools Closed, Students Rescued

Authorities ordered schools shut in many districts including Rajouri, Reasi, and Poonch due to flash floods and landslides. In Jammu city, the ground floor of the IIIM hostel was submerged, and 45 students had to be rescued safely by SDRF teams using boats.

Government Alerts and Evacuations

The Jammu & Kashmir administration has declared a flood alert, deploying rescue teams and opening control rooms. Evacuation efforts are underway in vulnerable areas, especially along riverbanks. Citizens have been advised to stay away from streams and avoid unnecessary travel.

Environmental Concerns

Experts warn that climate change is intensifying rainfall patterns, leading to frequent floods and landslides in hilly states like J&K. Such extreme weather events not only damage infrastructure but also threaten livelihoods and agriculture.

Outlook

The Meteorological Department has predicted more rain over the next few days. While efforts are ongoing to restore normalcy, the situation remains tense, with residents bracing for further rainfall.
