BJP Parliamentary Board Meets to Finalize Vice-Presidential Candidate | VP Election 2025

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Parliamentary Board will meet today at the party headquarters in New Delhi to finalize the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) candidate for the Vice-Presidential election scheduled for September 9, 2025.

The high-level meeting will be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will include Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP President J.P. Nadda, and other senior leaders. The NDA has already authorized Modi and Nadda to make the final selection, with the decision expected to be reviewed by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

The urgency of the decision follows the sudden resignation of Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21, 2025, citing health issues. However, political circles are abuzz with speculation about possible internal differences.

According to party sources, the BJP is keen to select a leader with deep BJP-RSS organizational roots. Names being considered include:

  • Acharya Devvrat, Governor of Gujarat and a Jat leader, seen as a strong choice to consolidate Jat support.
  • Thawarchand Gehlot, Karnataka Governor and a veteran Dalit leader, whose selection could strengthen outreach to backward classes.
  • Om Mathur, Governor of Sikkim, a seasoned BJP strategist with strong RSS connections.
  • Manoj Sinha, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, known for his administrative experience.

The Vice-President also serves as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, making this election strategically significant for the NDA as it looks to maintain its influence in Parliament.
