PM Awas Yojana 2025: Affordable Housing for Every Indian

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is one of the most ambitious housing schemes launched by the Government of India, aimed at providing affordable housing to all citizens. Launched in 2015, the scheme seeks to ensure that every Indian family owns a “pucca house” (permanent home) with basic facilities such as water, electricity, and sanitation. As a result, the mission targets housing for all by 2025.
Objectives of PMAY
- Housing for All: PMAY focuses on providing permanent houses to economically weaker sections (EWS), low-income groups (LIG), and middle-income groups (MIG). Consequently, many families now have access to secure homes.
- Financial Assistance: The government offers subsidies on home loans under the Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS). Additionally, this support makes home ownership more attainable.
- Urban & Rural Coverage: The scheme is divided into:
- PMAY-Urban (PMAY-U): For residents of cities.
- PMAY-Gramin (PMAY-G): For residents of villages. Moreover, this ensures inclusive development across the country.
- Women Empowerment: Ownership of houses is encouraged in the name of women, or jointly with their husband, thereby promoting gender equality.
Key Features of PMAY
- Subsidy of up to ₹2.67 lakh on housing loans. Furthermore, the scheme promotes affordable financing options.
- Eco-friendly houses encourage sustainable construction practices, thus supporting environmental responsibility.
- Priority given to marginalized groups such as widows, differently-abled individuals, SC, ST, and OBC. In addition, these measures help reduce social inequality.
- The scheme aims to achieve housing for all by 2025.
