The Bengal Files Trailer Launch Disrupted in Kolkata Amid Controversy

The trailer launch of filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri’s highly anticipated film The Bengal Files faced unexpected disruption in Kolkata on August 16, 2025. Originally planned at Quest Mall, the event was abruptly moved to ITC Royal Bengal following technical issues, which included the cutting of all wires, halting the screening.

Vivek Agnihotri alleged political interference and censorship, claiming that hotel staff and police prevented the trailer from being shown. The incident has ignited a debate on freedom of expression and the role of politics in art. Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar condemned the disruption, calling it an undemocratic attempt to suppress the filmmaker’s voice.

Meanwhile, Kolkata police clarified that the organizers did not have proper permission for the public screening under the West Bengal Cinemas (Regulation) Act, 1954. Authorities emphasized that the event lacked the required documentation, which is mandatory for such screenings.

The Bengal Files is a historical drama based on the 1946 Calcutta riots, also known as Direct Action Day, highlighting communal tensions during that period. Supporters of the film argue it brings light to overlooked historical events, while critics claim it could be politically sensitive.

Despite the controversy, Agnihotri confirmed that the film will release nationwide on September 27, 2025. Actor Mithun Chakraborty, part of the film, expressed surprise over the disruption but assured audiences that the release schedule remains unchanged.
