Two Dead, 117 Injured in Dahi Handi Celebrations 2025

The joyous festival of Janmashtami turned tragic this year when two people lost their lives and at least 117 others were injured during Dahi Handi celebrations across Maharashtra. The incidents occurred as several human pyramids collapsed while attempting to reach and break the earthen pot hung high above the ground.

Dahi Handi, celebrated the day after Krishna Janmashtami, involves enthusiastic teams, known as Govindas, forming tall pyramids to break the handi. Despite strict safety guidelines issued by the state government, many participants reportedly did not use protective gear, leading to severe injuries, including fractures and head trauma.

Authorities have urged organizers to ensure medical aid at venues and follow height restrictions for pyramids. Chief Minister expressed grief over the loss of lives and announced compensation for the families of the deceased and financial aid for the injured.

The incident has once again raised questions about the balance between tradition and safety. While the spirit of Lord Krishna’s playful act inspires the event, experts emphasize that celebrating festivals responsibly is essential to avoid such tragedies.
